Revolutionizing Autism Therapy with Virtual Reality

Project type

Applied Research in Virtual Reality & Artificial Intelligence

Date

August 2022 - Present

Location

Virginia Commonwealth University

Role

Lead Researcher & Game Designer

Our research project focuses on harnessing the potential of virtual reality (VR) as a therapeutic tool for individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). By creating tailored VR environments, we aim to support the development of social and communication skills in children and adolescents with ASD. Through an iterative design and development process, our team is creating a comprehensive VR program that simulates real-life social situations within a controlled and safe setting. This immersive experience allows participants to practice and enhance their social adaptation skills, including emotion recognition and expression, social responsiveness, and communication abilities. By leveraging VR technology, our research aims to empower individuals with ASD to navigate social interactions more effectively and improve their overall quality of life. The findings from this study will guide subsequent testing and evaluation, ensuring the refinement and optimization of the VR environment to address the unique challenges and strengths of individuals with ASD. Ultimately, our goal is to foster inclusivity and enhance the social and educational experiences of individuals with ASD, empowering them to thrive in various settings.
