The Partnership for People with Disabilities (PPD) submitted their proposal for the SALTTR project yesterday! Hopefully we will hear soon about the proposal's success. If the project is funded, there will be the opportunity for members of ASDCC with developmental disabilities to participate in paid resource creation for the community! I'm very excited personally for the potential of ASDCC members to make significant contributions to wider disability community resources. Please feel free to reach out if you're interested in participating!
The State Council for Higher Education in Virginia (SCHEV) is currently working on the development of official "Guidelines for Accommodation Practices for Students with Disabilities at Virginia Public Higher Education Institutions." This initiative represents a significant milestone for the disability community, as it addresses a longstanding issue wherein the responsibility for seeking disability-related training was left to individual professors' discretion. This lack of uniformity led to substantial disparities in attitudes and willingness among professors to accommodate students with disabilities. The establishment of these guidelines is a crucial step toward rectifying this disparity and ensuring a more consistent and supportive approach to disability accommodations across higher education institutions in Virginia. By setting minimum standards for professor trainings and providing resources, these guidelines will foster a more inclusive and equitable learning environment for students with disabilities, promoting equal access and opportunity for all.
