Today, we are thrilled to share some exciting news about two outstanding individuals within our association. Ellie Bavuso, our current President, and Rohan Rathi, our Treasurer, have been featured in VCUNews for their exceptional participation in the Honors Summer Undergraduate Research Program (HSURP). Let's dive into their remarkable research endeavors and explore how they are making a positive impact in their respective fields.
Ellie Bavuso, a rising senior in the Honors College, is a Biology major with minors in Chemistry and Psychology. Her research focuses on harnessing the power of virtual reality (VR) and artificial intelligence (AI) to empower individuals with developmental disabilities. Through innovative problem-solving, Ellie is creating resources that promote self-efficacy and empower individuals to navigate social interactions with confidence.
By utilizing VR technology, Ellie aims to provide a safe and controlled environment for individuals with developmental disabilities to build their social skills and enhance their quality of life. Her research delves into designing virtual scenarios that simulate real-world interactions, allowing individuals to practice and gain mastery over various social situations. This pioneering approach embraces inclusivity and offers new possibilities for personalized therapy and support.
Rohan Rathi, also a rising senior in the Honors College, pursues a different yet equally impactful research path. As a Bioinformatics major with minors in Chemistry and Anthropology, Rohan's research centers around understanding the role of traditional healers within Kenya's cultural and medical system, particularly in relation to HIV.
Rohan's qualitative research delves into the intricate dynamics between traditional healers and western medicine, with a focus on promoting collaboration and mutual understanding. He recognizes the importance of incorporating traditional healers as essential figures within global health initiatives and strives to bridge the gap between traditional healing practices and modern healthcare systems. By involving members of the target population as content experts, Rohan's work ensures cultural sensitivity and empowers communities to actively participate in their healthcare decisions.
The achievements of Ellie Bavuso and Rohan Rathi are a testament to their passion, dedication, and commitment to driving positive change in their fields of study. As ASDCC members, we celebrate their accomplishments and stand alongside them as they continue to make a meaningful impact. Their research serves as an inspiration to us all, reminding us of the power we hold to create inclusive, empowering, and innovative solutions.
